    • If you've never been to Alaska, you may think of the Northern state as a frozen-over, icy no-man's-land where polar bears and penguins roam along icy tundras and icebergs. If you go far enough North, you will eventually find a nigh-uninhabitable land of wolves and ice, but the truth is that Southeast Alaska experiences warm Springs, hot Summers and beautiful Autumns, and you won't find penguins up North, anyways, they're from Antarctica.

There are a lot of beautiful coastal towns and cities and island communities in Southeast Alaska, from Petersburg to Juneau, but if you want to enjoy a mix of city living and the wild frontier that is AK, you may want to check out Anchorage, home to roughly 40% of the entire state's populace.

Finding Apartments for Rent in Anchorage, AK

Finding just the right apartment in Anchorage can be tricky. There's usually real estate available whether you're talking about places to buy or rent, but not always in the neighborhoods that you want to live in. That said, the relatively low crime of Anchorage, the great transportation options and the amenities available throughout the city mean that there are really no "bad" neighborhoods.

      Top Neighborhoods in Anchorage, AK

One of the best neighborhoods in Anchorage, if you don't mind a drive to town in the morning, is Chugiak, which is actually an unincorporated area of Anchorage. The beauty of Chugiak is that you get the peace and quiet of rural living, but you're in close proximity to the city. Spenard is a little more urban, and very rich with its own history and culture, having once been its own city. Spenard is a popular spot for writers and artists, and a great place to enjoy the Anchorage nightlife.

      Cultural Attractions in Anchorage, AK

Anchorage is nothing if not respectful to the history of the city and to the area. The Alaska Native Heritage Center is your first stop if you want to develop an understanding of the natives who have lived in Alaska since long before the arrival of settlers. The Athabaskan, Eyak, Tlingit, Haida, Tsimshian, Unangax, Alutiiq, Yup'ik, Cup'ik, Siberian Yupik, and Inupiaq people are all represented here. Attractions here include the Hall of Cultures, a theater, and a Gathering Place, both home to various activities, demonstrations and performances honoring the native people of Alaska. You can even find six Native dwellings around Lake Tiulana to get a better idea of how the Natives lived. Situated on 26 acres of wooded land, the Alaska Native Heritage Center is a must-see for those interested in the history of the area.

      Dining in Anchorage, AK

You have not had seafood until you've had it in Alaska. If you want fresh crab, you can enjoy crab so fresh that it was in the ocean just yesterday. Smoked salmon is a major attraction here, as is grilled halibut. You can enjoy a locally-brewed beer from one of the local microbreweries along with your fresh seafood. We couldn't begin to list every single great restaurant in Anchorage, but one that you should definitely check out are the Moose's Tooth Pub and Pizzeria, where you can take in a lively atmosphere, some of the best pizza in Alaska, amazing smoked salmon and a wide range of beers local, domestic and import beers. Another one to visit is Simon and Seafort's Saloon and Grill, with great oysters, amazing steaks, and a fun atmosphere.

      Weather in Anchorage, AK

Anchorage's climate is sub-arctic, but enjoys a strong maritime influence, which means that the weather is fairly moderate. Summers range from 55 to 78 F, with winters dipping to 5 to 30 F. You will want to bundle up in the winter, but generally, Anchorage weather is quite agreeable. In the summertime you may even want to invest in a pair of cool shorts and check out the local swimming spots.

Whether you want to enjoy the great outdoors or the city life, Anchorage brings you the full Alaskan experience from fresh seafood to beautiful wooded acres and amazing people.
