Neighborhood - Civic Center

Picture of Civic Center San Francisco

Civic Center

Civic Center represents the seat of San Francisco’s local government, with City Hall and other governmental buildings nearby. It also houses several cultural institutions, and the city’s central library. Many of the structures in this area are also historic. The United Nations Charter was signed in the War Memorial Veteran’s Buildings Herbst Theatre in 1945, which led to the creation of the United Nations.

Civic Center is located only a few blocks north of the intersection of Van Ness Avenue and Markey Street. Residents of the Civic Center neighborhood cite the proximity to the center of San Francisco and the business district as reasons to live there. However, the area does have a higher crime rate than the rest of the city, due to the close proximity to Tenderloin, a lower rent area with a large homeless population.
